Two GUC board members, former NBA players turned children’s book authors, bring their inspiring stories to life with “Yoga Bob: The Boy Who Brought Light Into The Night” and “Craig and His Magical Basketball”. These authors visit schools wearing their books’ themes to host engaging yoga and goal-setting workshops, complete with prizes and activities that spark creativity and wellness. Perfect for empowering young minds, these books and events make learning fun and transformative!

Yoga Bob is a children’s book by author Bobby Jones, who holds a BA in Writing from the University of Washington. The book tells the story of a 10-year-old boy from Compton who learns to manage his fear of the dark through yoga, offering a unique perspective on mindfulness and resilience. Future installments will follow Yoga Bob through elementary, middle, and high school, making the series suitable for students of all ages. The purpose of this series is to provide representation for black and brown stories in the yoga community, highlighting the importance of diversity and inclusion in wellness narratives. Additionally, 15% of the book’s proceeds are dedicated to supporting the GUC programming, furthering the mission of promoting holistic well-being among youth.

This is a story about a kid who found his life’s passion with his favorite mentor, his mother. Through their bond, Craig was able to understand what it would take to work hard, overcome obstacles and ultimately succeed in fulfilling his goal to become a professional basketball player.

GUC’s Reading Across America workshop at Compton College Library is a vibrant celebration of literacy and education. Featuring book readings by two former NBA players turned children’s authors, hands-on STEAM workshops, and thrilling e-sports activities, the event provided an engaging experience for young minds. With food, prizes, and interactive fun, the activation fostered a love for learning and highlighted GUC’s commitment to empowering the community through education and creativity.
